Nine Divine Nights Of Navratri Celebration 2021

Navaratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of Hindu deity Shakti. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, ‘nava’ meaning nine and ‘ratri’ meaning nights. During these nine nights and ten days, nine forms of Shakti/Devi are worshiped. The 10th day is commonly referred to as Vijayadashami or “Dussehra.”

Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.

First three days

The goddess is separated as a spiritual force called Durga also known as Kali in order to destroy all our impurities. During these three days neivedyam will have to be spicy, sour like Pulihora, Lemon and Sambar Rice

Second three days

The Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth, as she is the goddess of wealth. During these three days, neivedyam like Sakkarai Pongal, Kesari and Payasam is offered.

Final three days

The final set of three days is spent in worshiping the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. During these three days, neivedyam that is in white colour like Ven Pongal, Thiyar Sadam, Sago Payasam is offered.

In Southern states of Tamil Nadu and to a lesser extent in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the festival of Navrathri is called Kolu or Navratri Golu, where women set up decorated planks in a corner of the house and decorating it with dolls which are collected over the years. Sundals are very popular among Navratri recipes/Golu Recipe as various varieties of sundals are made everyday for Neyveidhyam and the same are distributed to the friends, relatives and neighbours who are invited to see the Golu.

Happy Navaratri, everyone!
